Guests chopping vegetables at the clay kitchen counters with their hosts

A hands-on Sri Lankan cooking experience

In a real clay kitchen, grind the spices, stir the curries over a wood fire, then sit down and feast on your own cooking.

Why Karma Kitchen

You do the cooking

From scraping coconut to tempering spices — every dish on the table is made by you, guided by us.

Real village kitchen

Clay walls, clay pots, coconut shell spoons, stone mortar and pestle — the way Sri Lankans have cooked for centuries.

Then you feast

After you have cooked, everyone gathers round the table to sit like a family.

Not a demonstration. Your hands, our fire.

Every cooking class is hands-on and unhurried.

How it works

  1. Hosts welcoming guests in the garden

    Make yourself at home

Meet your hosts, settle in with a welcome drink, and talk through what you would like to cook.

  2. Hands grinding spices with a stone roller on a grinding stone

    Cook like a local

Use equipment that our grandmothers still use and methods going back to our great-great-grandmothers.

  3. A wood fire burning in the clay hearth

    Cook over the wood fire

With clay pots, an open flame and your hands doing the work, rice, curries, sambols and papadams come to life.

  4. A plate being filled with rice and curries from the clay pots

    Eat what you cooked

Gather round the table and enjoy the meal you have made, together like a family.

The tools you'll use

“Come hungry, leave as family.”
